John Logan's extraordinary documentary play about the trial of Nathan Leopold Jnr and Richard Loeb, who kidnapped, mutilated and killed a teenage boy for the thrill of it.

Never the sinner

B
elieving themselves to be Nietzschean 'supermen', not bound by conventional morality, they set out to 'stun the world'. Indeed, they seized the imagination of the public and press at the time - Chicago, 1924 - and until the sensations of OJ Simpson and Michael Jackson, remained the "Trial of the Century".

If anyone deserved to hang, it was Leopold and Loeb. As the prosecuting lawyer said: "They committed the crime. They showed no mercy. They confessed to the crime. They've shown no remorse." Yet Clarence Darrow, the world-famous lawyer, said by many to be the finest American legal mind of the century, came out of retirement to try and save the two young men from the rope. His summing up is seen as the greatest of all speeches against the use of capital punishment.

To this day, the Leopold & Loeb case is quoted as a classic example of criminal pathology and as one of the first occasions when the media made an impact on the progress of a trial.

The play makes for a riveting evening in theatre - and one which will have its audiences talking through the issues for a long time afterwards. The Thursday performance will be followed by the opportunity of Q & A with cast and director.

John Logan, writer of Oscar-nominated screenplays Gladiator and The Aviator, took twenty years to research, write and revise Never the Sinner, and The Stage Club (www.stageclub.com) is delighted to be able to bring the full text of the final (1997) version to Singapore for the first time, supported by our official media, Fridae.com.

The cast is led by Hansel Tan Shen-Wei (The Merchant of Venice, 4.48 Psychosis) and Paul Hannon (Twelfth Night, Oh, What a Lovely War!). Never the Sinner, DBS Arts Centre, 22-25 February. Please note MDA Advisory: The play contains adult themes, suitable for 16 years and above.
