Even though it's the oldest board game known to man, the 4,000-year-old Chinese game of Go deserves a retro movement. 
P layed with black and white pebbles, in Go, or as the Chinese call it Wei qi, players compete to win territory on a board of intersecting lines. Even though there are only nine basic rules to the game, Go is deceptively complex due the infinite number of ways in which a contest can evolve, whereas other games like chess or checkers have finite possibilities. Perhaps this is why nobody can create a computer program that's able to play Go. The game is a metaphor for what mathematicians call the Chaos Theory. "The ancient Japanese considered the Go board to be a microcosm of the universe," says the character Sol from the totally bitchin' film Pi. "The possibilities are endless. They say that no two Go games have ever been alike... So, the Go board actually represents an extremely complex and chaotic universe."
The Singapore Weiqi Association (Tel: (65) 6356 9756 Fax: (65) 6353 3105, www.weiqi.org.sg, weiqi@weiqi.org.sg) began in 1981 with about 100 members, and by the year 2000 had 20,000!
