The proliferation of luxury chocolate brands explains the resilience of certain companies in spite of (and perhaps because of) the economic downturn. Experts say more people are splurging on their taste buds and driving candy sales to record heights.

Yet, as consumer palates and buying interests become more sophisticated, chocolate manufacturers are offering more than candy, they're offering the 'chocolate experience'. Below are three luxury chocolate shops worth checking out in Singapore.

Hediard Boutique

The fabulous chocolates are just the start of your epicurean journey into this little Parisian haven with its signature red and black striped packaging.

In addition to unusual treats such as chocolate caramels with a touch of salt just a the merest taste to tantalise the throat are teas, coffees, mustards, olives, honey and other goodies you suddenly realise you need.

These delightful chocolates make exceptionally good gifts. There are animal shapes (cute), hearts and diamonds (romantic), and plenty soaked in booze (deliciously decadent).

Gift boxes include some with charming pictures of musical composers.

The chocolates are flown in fresh from Zurich, contain no preservatives and last up to two weeks in the fridge (if you have the willpower).
