Ichiban Boshi

Of Fish & Seaweed

When you think of Japanese cuisine, you think raw fish and sushi. For me, when I think of sushi, I think of Ichiban Boshi. It's that simple really.

I've never been a fan of sashimi until recently when I decided to be daring enough to try raw salmon, tuna, swordfish and shrimps. Since then, I view Japanese food in a different light. It helps that Singapore has plenty of Japanese restaurants. But you know how pricey Japanese food can be, especially in upscale Jap eateries. So when I discovered Ichiban Boshi, I was a happier person.

Ichiban Boshi boasts a wide selection of sushi and various sashimi, and bento sets. This restaurant offers good quality Japanese food at reasonable prices. Mind you, most of their sushi are priced at only $1.90.

Though their food may be less expensive, they're not one to compromise. At first glance, the decor of the restaurant looks rather classy and chic, which might deter you from stepping in at first. But once you check out the menu and get assistance from their helpful waiters, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I dined there recently and was able to enjoy a huge spread of delicious sushi and sashimi and let me emphasise on their prompt service. The waitress who served me was very friendly and helpful. Her recommendations were good and gave me and my dining partners due attention. California handrolls are one of my favourites so I ordered the unagi and teriyaki chicken ones ($1.90 each). They were tasty and the fillings were quite generous. The seaweed was also crispy and nice to bite into.

The softshell crab tempura ($5.30) is a must-try. It's served with a bowl of special light soy sauce that enhanced the flavours. The potato croquette ($1.90) is one of my favourites. Mine came piping hot, which is a good indication that they prepare your food only after you order, to maintain freshness. This croquette is crispy on the outside but soft and warm on the inside. The mashed potatoes were mixed with corn and tasted really good. You'd definitely want more than one.

As for the sushi, do try the Deep Impact ($1.90). It's actually made with seasoned baby octopus, scallops and tempura flakes. The salmon kawa roll ($1.90) was as good - wrapped in crepes, a bit different from the seaweed ones. If you want a spicy kick, get the spicy ebi sushi ($1.90), it's really quite fiery but fret not, a cup of green tea should do the trick.

I could go on about this wonderful place but I shall let you experience it for yourself when you try out their delightful sushi and good eats.
