THINK: Describe your average workday?

Work starts at 10:30, and we are usually busy with clients throughout the day. If I have some free time, I would check emails or catch up on reading (fashion, news etc.). Work ends officially at 8, but working overtime is not rare.

THINK: What do you dislike and like most about your job?

I enjoy chatting with clients while cutting their hair. Most of them have been with me for more then 10 years, so they are like my friends. To be a hairstylist is not to be a desk-bound person, you need to have good interpersonal skills, travel for photo shoots and fashion shows. There’s really not much I don’t like bout my job. I’m lucky to do what I’m doing now and liking it.

THINK: Why did you become a hairstylist?

I thought that being a hairstylist was a very glamourous job, since we can wear nice clothes to work everyday, but after being in the industry, I realized that it’s a lot of hard work, but it’s well worth it.

THINK: Was it easy finding a job as a hairstylist when you got started?

It’s not easy finding a job to be a hairstylist at the start. It’s easier to find jobs as an assistant. You would need to have some experience first to be a hairstylist, so its tough in the beginning. You have to persist.

THINK: Who’s the inspiration in your life, and why?

At first, it was Vidal Sassoon, he’s well known throughout the world because of the way he changes the hairdressing industry, but slowly I realized that there are very good hairstylists in Singapore too, like Roland Chow and David Gan. They have contributed a lot to the local hair scene. To be a hairdresser is one thing, but able to contribute to the industry is another.

THINK: How important is hair to the overall appearance?

Most people say that it’s the inner beauty that’s important, but sadly most of us judge a person at the first impression. And most people look at a person from head to toe, so hair is really important, don’t u think?

THINK: What do you think is the hair direction for spring?

Fuss free!!!

THINK: What are your secrets to success and who are your A-list clientele?

Listen and do the best u can. A-list clientele? You know who you are.

THINK: Tell us what do you dislike and like most about your job?

I love to see my clients go out after a cut feeling stylish and confident.

THINK: Why did you become a hairstylist?

Because it’s my passion to beautify people and I love to see their smiling faces after having a good cut.

THINK: Which celebrities you most enjoy working with?

To me, celebrities are just normal clients who make me proud whenever they walk out with a hairstyle that I’ve created that exudes their personality.

THINK: What do you think is the hair direction for spring ’06?

Hair colours are going in the direction of red, black and tones of cool browns. But of course, most importantly, the colors have to suit the person’s look.

THINK: What are your secrets to the success and who are your A-list clientele?

Success is not something you achieve by self proclaiming that you have made it. I think that if you are being recommended by word of mouth around people because of your excellent work, you have succeeded.

THINK: Lastly, do you have any inspirational words for the Hairstylist wannabe?

A hairstylist is not a title that you can give yourself whenever you want. Today, many people think that they can be a hairstylist as long as they have a pair of scissors in hand. Learn with an open heart and cut with passion. To be successful, knowing how to cut well is not enough, understanding and knowing what your client wants is more important than anything else.
